We received an urgent wish from Marty, a friend of Ken's, who is terminally ill. Ken wished to relive his favourite family vacation in Jamaica, but his deteriorating health made it impossible to travel. So, we decided to bring Jamaica to Ken and host a party for him, his family and friends. But with his health quickly getting worse we had to be fast, and set the event to happen only 5 days after we first heard from Marty!
We reached out to our followers, and word spread quickly. Soon, the Jamaican community in Edmonton came forward to make Ken's dream come true. Special thanks to Cherelle who helped organize the entertainment. She and Sherol are beautiful CariWest dancers. After their performance, they helped Ken put on some feathers and taught him a few steps. Dorant, a wonderful singer, gave up his date night to be there and sang beautifully. Dorant even brought a hat he had brought back from his own trip to Jamaica, had everyone there sign it, and gave it to Ken as a keepsake. Danielle, an amazing steelpan player, gave Ken a quick lesson on how to play the instrument after her wonderful performance.
Val, the owner and chef from Gen-X Caribbean Patties and Catering, provided a delicious menu enjoyed even by those unfamiliar with the cuisine. Ken and all the Island Entertainers loved the food.
The party took place in the Auditorium of the General Hospital, where Ken was in the palliative unit, and we are grateful for their support. And meant the world to his friends and family. They had an amazing time.
It was a relief we moved so quickly to make this wish come true because not even 2 weeks after his party, Ken passed away.
Ken's wish is a perfect example of how it takes a whole community of angels to make each wish happen. We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this wish come true.
